Property owners in Lancaster County should be advised of a break from the norm in filing tax assessment appeals.
The deadline is 5 p.m. this coming Friday, July 31. The deadline for annual appeals typically is August 1, but since that date falls on a Saturday this year, the deadline is a day earlier than normal.
An appeal that is filed by July 31 will be considered with the results to be effective on next year’s property tax bills. Anything not filed by then will be considered for the following year.
In central Pennsylvania, usual tax assessment appeal deadlines in Adams, Dauphin, Franklin and York counties also are affected by the weekend date of August 1. Those counties are adjusting their dates and policies for filing deadlines. Here is a snapshot of upcoming tax assessment appeal deadlines for central and southeastern Pennsylvania counties:
Adams – August 3
Berks – August 17. Normally August 15, but that also falls on a Saturday this year.
Chester – First business day in August (August 3).
Cumberland – September 1
Dauphin – August 3
Franklin – Must be in the office by August 3
Lancaster – July 31
Lebanon – September 1
Schuylkill – September 1
York – August 1. As long as the appeal is postmarked by August 1 it will be accepted.
