For Immediate Release
York, Pa. – We note with sadness the passing of Robert J. Stewart, Esquire, one of the founders of our York practice and a pillar of the firm for more than four decades.
After serving his country as an officer in the Marines during the Korean War, Stewart helped found the law firm of Liverant & Stewart in York. That firm later merged with another York law firm in 1965 to form Liverant, Senft and Cohen – the firm that merged into Barley Snyder in 1992.
A Nashville, Tenn., native, Stewart worked as a litigator in the area of insurance defense and had served as the president of the Pennsylvania Defense Institute. Stewart retired from Barley Snyder a decade ago.
“Bob’s southern gentility and casual charm sometimes masked the erudition and the technical and strategic capability that he brought to his cases,” Barley Snyder managing partner Jeff Lobach recalled. “His appearance on the other side encouraged plaintiffs’ lawyers to settle. Bob was completely unflappable in and out of court. He was quick to smile and slow to anger and was recognized by colleagues and opponents alike as a consummate gentleman.”
Please join Barley Snyder in expressing our condolences to our York colleagues and the Stewart family.
