Lancaster, Pa. – Barley Snyder partner Donald R. Geiter has received the Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) certification from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
The IAPP is the world’s largest, not-for-profit global information privacy community, governed by a distinguished group of privacy professionals. The CIPM designation is the global industry standard in privacy program management, confirming an individual has the expertise to establish, maintain and manage a privacy program throughout all stages of its life cycle. The certification is given to members who pass a rigorous exam which includes developing a privacy program as well as managing and operating an organization’s privacy regime.
Geiter is the chair of Barley Snyder’s Cybersecurity Service Team which helps the firm’s clients navigate the complex laws, regulations and standards that relate to the field. He also serves on the firm’s technology committee and as the firm’s Chief Privacy Officer. Geiter has over 20 years of experience working with cybersecurity issues, with his first experience at the U.S. Navy’s Office of Naval Research.
“The CIPM designation is recognized in the privacy and cybersecurity industry as an important marker for managing organizational privacy,” said Geiter. “The training which accompanies the certification process emphasizes risk management, privacy operations, auditing and more. I am pleased to add this certification to my repertoire.”
In 2020, Geiter received his Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) certification, demonstrating a mastery of jurisdictional laws, regulations and enforcement models, plus legal requirements for handling and transferring data in the U.S. private sector. He earned a master’s degree in cybersecurity law and policy at the University of Maryland’s Francis King Carey School of Law in 2019 and earned his Juris Doctor at the Suffolk University Law School.
