This month marks the 30th anniversary of when a cargo ship named the Golden Venture ran aground in Queens, New York carrying 286 passengers who were attempting to escape China due to political or religious persecution.
The passengers were arrested, many of whom were held at the York County prison. Our Managing Partner Jeff Lobach, who was president of the York County Bar Association at the time, spearheaded a pro bono immigration project which garnered national attention and became known as the “Golden Venture.” Tonight, we introduce part one of a multi-part series commemorating these events.
